WORK FOR SOLDIERS
TE AWAMUTU ACTIVITY i DISTRICT COMMITTEE FORMED I (Special to Tunes} TE AWAMUTU, Friday I ! Convened by the Mayor of Te j ; Awamutu, Mr G. Spinley, a meeting ' i of about 50 people was held at the i Town Hall on Wednesday night to ! consider the formation of a patriotic committee, or such other kindred committee as might be desired. During the discussion representatives of the Red Cross Society intimated that the society and other organisations ; were actively engaged in work which could be termed war work, and they desired to retain their organisations and work as separate units, with scope for co-operation as far as possible with a patriotic committee. This view was heartily approved by others present, and the opinion was expressed that probably the main activity of the committee would be to arrange functions for the purpose of farewelling troops, though any other necessary work would be done. The regulations which laid down that any funds raised would have to be forwarded to Auckland to be handled by the major body were not welcomed, and the opinion was expressed that this would have an effect on the support which might be expected generally. On the motion of Mr Jas. Oliphant, it was decided to form a Te Awamutu and District Patriotic Committee for the purpose of acting as such within the powers and authorities given by the regulations. It was decided to elect a general committee j which would elect an executive from i the personnel of the main commit- ! tee. The following were elected:— 1 Messrs G. Spinley, B. Malone, S. C. B. Macky, G. Tarr (Ohaupo), A. j Allen, A. Hughes, C. M. Speedy, J. i Oliphant, J. T. Johnson, L. S. Arm- ! strong, G. S. Clarke, N. Worthington, A. H. Laybourn, H. S. Weightmann, ; W. G. Neill (Te Kawa), G. A. Gibbs, H. J. Irwin, G. Bridge, F. E. Lehndorf (Kihikihi), L. W. Spence, R. H. ! Annibal, E. H. Cucksey, M. Barnett, J. Grummitt, P. Baird, F. Parsons and T. Adams. In addition the following women were elected: —Mesdames J. G. Wynyard (Kihikihi), N. Delaney, Mclndoe (Kihikihi), H. S. Weightmann, L. Eyre (Kihikihi) and H. Shilton (Kihikihi). An entertainment committee was set up to make arrangements for a public farewell to the members of the first -echelon of the Special Force who are on final leave. The function will be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday next when a concert and dance will be the programme, and presentations will be made to the men on behalf of the district. FAREWELL ARRANGED MORRINSVILLE FUNCTION (Special to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Friday The Morrinsville District Patriotic Committee met in the Municipal Chambers, the Mayor, Mr W. Hetherington, presiding. It was decided to hold a farewell social and dance in honour of the soldiers of the district who are on final leave. A strong committee was elected to arrange details and the date was fixed as December 27. The Physical Culture Hall has been booked for that date, and the com- ! mittee is hopeful of a large attendance of the public.
