WOOL EXPORTS
MISGIVINGS IN BRITAIN
CRITICISM OF GOVERNMENT THE NEW ZEALAND CLIP (tinted Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copy rig-tit; LONDON, Dec. 16 There are grave misgivings regarding the Government’s inadequate attention to the problem of wool exports. The arrangements for the purchase of the South African clip are welcomed, but trade circles continue to stress the urgent need for reasonable prices for export market in order to avoid the danger of accumulation of .arge surpluses. Available New Zealand and Austra ian exports will probably represent an increase of from 50 to 30 per cent, on those of 1914. The normal British and French consumption, even providing for wartime requirements, amounts only to 56 per cent, of New Zealand and Austrailan production. Consequently there will be a huge exportable surplus. This would increase if anything interfered with the French textile trade, the centre of which is situated close to the Belgian frontier. SUPPLY FOR AMERICA SATISFACTION OF TRADE PRICES A HAPPY MEDIUM (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyngnt NEW YORK, Dec. 16 Reactions to the announcement that Britain would supply 10,000,0001 b oi Australian wool to United States importers are most satisfactory. The consensus of views among the trade, growers and officials is favourable, and there is only occasional adverse comment that topmakers’ prices are too high. Otherwise prices are regarded as fair, enabling substantial business to be done.
The trade is pleased at the use of the existing channels of distribution. It is believed that the prices are a happy medium between the high and low groups.
Manufacturers are satisfied that they can buy at the fixed prices and market goods at the current values Growers believe that Australian prices will dominate the market for the United States clip, thus stabilising American prices. Government circles are relieved that the plan is one which will satisfy growers.
