SUPPLY OF BOOTS
AUSTRALIAN FORCES AGREEMENT ON PRICE MINISTER EFFECTS SAVING (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyng-hu SYDNEY, Dec. 16 Boot manufacturers at a conference agreed to supply the Government with 200,000 pairs of boots for the defence forces, at the price stipulated by the acting-Minister of Supply, Sir Frederick Stewart. Sir Frederick said there would be a saving of 2s Hid a pair on the original price that manufacturers quoted, allowing for the increase in leather prices and improved design.
Ten bootmaking firms were named by the acting-Minister of Supply, Sir Frederick Stewart, in the House of Representatives, when he alleged that a “deliberate attempt at war profiteering” had been made in the prices for Army boots. Sir Frederick announced that he intended to exercise the special powers under the National Security Regulations to obtain 100,000 pairs of boots at a price to be determined by arbitration.
