SCOUT NEWS
Although most troops will have closed for the Christmas holidays by next week this column will not be discontinued. We shall have some troops In camp from whom we wish to hear Tull reports. If we are to judge our weather by the last few days we should nave some gocxl camping, and consequently some good reports. So send us your news, scribes, and keep the column going. Now is the time to put the “ out ” in Scouting. Wishing all troops the best of camping! HAMUTANA
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Don’t give in, dig in.
ST. GEORGE’S TROOP We held our last meeting for the year 1 on Monday night, making it pound even'mg and inviting the committee along as i C The’ Cubs were also along in good numbers, with their two lady cubmasters ; m attendance. The evening was spent i mainly in games and patrol stunts, each patrol being responsible lor 15 minutes of the programme, the Kangaroos putting on a good snow and winning the eomI petition. After tins, supper was served and a presentation was made to our ladj cubmaster, Mrs Borman, who is leaving ! iHe district.. The chairman made eulogistice references to the services which Mrs Borman had performed in her short stay with the pack. So ended another year of Scouting activities in the history of St. George’s i roup. See you in 1940! Scribe. i I ST. PETER'S TROOP ! Last Friday night we started as usual with a special competition. This time each patrol had to construct a bicycle . ambulance and ride it round a block witn a patient on it. This was entirely new , : lo the whole troop and the results were ( 1 surprisingly good. They were constructed | i with staves and ropes with coats be | iween them. All except one of the patrols ' used two bicycles only, the npringboks | using three. I’m afraid thai some of the 'patients would have been injured more by some or the ambulances than any other way. The Kiwis won the competition, , narrowly defeating the Springboks. Thi- | contest, although a speed event, took up a | • large portion or the parade, and when ; we got back we found ‘ kiwi " had ar-! : rived to refund our Jamboree money. A | 'game of Dodge-ball (very disastrous to! the hall) and flag-down llnished up the j evening. We had a very poor attendance i at the Scouts Own on Sunday, but I'm l sure those absent missed a very interestImg arternoon. St. Peter's has its llnai ! parade this year next Friday night. v Scribe I TE AWAIWUTU TROOP We hope you will excuse our long absence from the column, but we feel thai uiir scribe will now buck up and keep 1 things to date. Since we last met vast I .-hinges have occurred within the troop. We have suffered the loss of our best I leader. From when he took up the troop

until the present time he has put his whole heart and soul Into the work, devoting many hours to Individual boys, and he has created the real scouting spirit throughout the troop. As a leading Rover saicl lately: “ He is a man In a thousand.” I am not writing this praise to nil up space as those who are and have been connected with him will know. He is worthy of all the praise possible. I need hardly mention his name—Mr L. U. BulTord—“ Bully ” as he was affectionately known. But worse was to come, as we suffered another loss in our A.S.M.—Jack Brown, although only new to the job, Jack proved hirnseir worthy of it and carried out his duties efficiently. I feel sure we all hope that ir these boys have to go overseas they may have a safe and speedy return. The position of S.M. has been taken over by Mr 1. Deed, who, having had previous experience, is proving an excellent successor to “Bully,” but as yet we have no A.S.M. The troop attended a Guide camp-nre recently and we all had a great evening. Week-end camps have not been too frequent owing to the bad weather. The patrols have all been re-arranged owing tu the fact that one patrol was winning the monthly competition regularly. When things have settled down a little we will publish a list of the patrons. Next Friday we are holding a dance, the last function at which “ Bully ” will be present for a while. Cheerio and good Scouting. Scribe
