WASHINGTON Dec 15 Mr Cordell Hull, Secretary of State, announced that Pan-American consultations are being commenced towards engagement. It has not bean decided whether a conference will be held or negotiations be carried out through diplomatic channels. Mr Hull added that the United Statea would meet other American countries halfway. THE AIR BATTLE BRITISH PILOT'S STORY LONDON, Dec. 15 Further particulars of the air battle over the North Sea are now available. The engagement was the biggest which so far had taken place. When the enemy warships were located, consisting of one battleship, a oruiser, a submarine and small vessels the enemy seemed taken by surprise. * IM.W. The battle is described by the pilot of a leadng British aircraft as “a running fight among the German Islands.” From these the enemy sent up wave after wave of Messerschmidt fighters. Four of these were seen by the pilot to crash in flames into the sea, where they burned for some time, looking, he said. like beacons and illuminating sky and sea. GUNNER KILLED FALL OVER CLIFF CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday Overbalancing and falling twenty feet on to the rocks below, a gunner stationed at Battery Point was killed almost instantaneously this morning. He was William David Burke, of 74 Clyde Street, Invercargill, aged 20. Gunner Burke, who was alone at the time, was tipping rubbish over the cliff when he lost his balance and fell, striking his head on the rocks.
AUSTRALIAN AIRMEN 26,000 TO BE TRAINED SYDNEY. Dec. 16 The Prime Minister, Mr R. G. Menzies, officially announced that Australia had undertaken to provide 26,000 men—lo,4oo pilots and 15,600 observers, wireless operators and gunners as an initial contribution to the Empire air scheme. Most of the men would be trained in Australia. ‘•This adjustment of the oriainal scheme under which most of the men were to have been trained in Canada was made on the representations of the Commonwealth Government, which emphasised the value that participation in the scheme would be to Australia’s security if the greater part of the training were completed within the Commonwealth. Mr Menzies revealed that Britain would make substantial contributions to Australia’s scheme in finance, aircraft and instructors. The total cost of the scheme to Australia within the next three years was estimated to be not less than £50,0'00.000 (Australian). SUNK OR CAPTURED SANTIAGO. Dec. 1B It is officially stated that the Duesseldorf was captured, not sunk. She carried foodstuffs and 700 tons of oil.
