WITH THE AMATEURS

Pupils of Mrs Culford Bell A private recital of plays and sketches was given by pupils of Mrs Culford Bell this week, when parents and friends of the students were entertained.

The main items of a varied programme were three short plays by the junior pupils, these being presented in a finished manner, which showed evidence of careful training. They were: “The Prince and the Dragon” (comedy), “The Lost Purse” (old Italian), and a scene from “The Blue Bird” by Maeterlinck.

Mrs Culford Bell was presented by her pupils with a bouquet and a beautiful volume of modern 3-act plays, as a token of appreciation. Airs Bell is now looking forward to a reunion next week w ith her former pupil, Miss Betty Welch, who has been so successful in Sydney, and who is coming home for Christmas. Christmas at Performers’ Club Tonight’s meeting of the Hamilton Performers’ Club will take the form of a Christmas party. A gay time is expected. Amateurs Go on Tour The Wellington Thespians will give a performance of Noel Coward's daring play, “Private Lives,” at Alasterton tonight. Operatic Society in Variety Show It was unfortunate that owing to the troublous times the Wellington Operatic and Theatrical Society was unable to stage a musical comedy for 1939. The “Stardust” Variety Show, which was produced on Tuesday night, was an excellent substitute. The production was in the hands of Airs E. Ransom-Myers. Presentation to Producer The final performance of “Robert’s Wife’’ by the Wellington Repertory Theatre was a very enthusiastic affair, and a highly-successful season was brought to a satisfactory conclusion. On the stage after the final curtain there was a gathering of the mem- I bers of the cast, and on their behalf I Mr W. F. C. Balham presented the ! producer, Mr Leo du Chateau, with j a garden chair, expressing gratitude ■ for his assistance.
