TERRIBLE EXPLOSION
1000 PEOPLE DEAD RESULT OF POISON GAS VILLAGE WIPED OUT (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Dec. 15, 3.15 p.m.) BUCHAREST, Dec. 14 An explosion of chlorine gas tanks j at a cellulose factory at the small village of Zarnesti, in Transylvania, caused an appalling loss of life. It is reported that the whole factory staff of 1000 perished, either as a result of poison gas, which spread for many miles, or in the subsequent fire, which consumed the whole village of Zarnesti. Hundreds more were killed by gas in the surrounding district. An excess of pressure in the pipes caused the explosion. The fumes spread rapidly among the workers. Then two containers blew up. Whole families in houses a mile from the factory were killed by the gas while asleep. A fireman of a passenger train standing at the station 250 yards away was killed. The passengers fled. The station staff remained, but all were killed by gas. Hundreds of people fleeing into the forests died in their tracks.
