SOCIAL SERVICES

QUESTION OF MEDICINE EVE OF GREAT CHANGES “I think we are on the eve of tremendous changes in the whole of the operations of our profession,” said the Tasmanian Minister for Health (Dr. J. F. Gaha) at a function held by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Hobart. “Hitherto we were a body devoted to certain activities of professionalism, but I am inclined to think the social demands of the age have changed our horizon and it is far more remote than hitherto. “The advent of social medicine is one of the problems. I believe certain great changes are imminent in the domestic policy of medicine. With certain developments in Tasmania, I believe surgery has taken its rightful place in our community life, but there are other aspects equally engaging.” The Tasmanian Government recently instituted a scheme of free medical services for country districts.
