SETTLEMENT REFUSED
AREA OF ABANDONED LAND CASE OF YOUNG FARMER (Special to Times) NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday “The Government is asking for production to be increased, yet it is refusing people the right to produce. That is the long and short of it,” said Mr R. Thomson at a meeting of the Whangamomona County Council, when strong exception was taken by members to the action of the Minister of Lands in refusing to grant permission to a young settler to take up 500 acres of abandoned land in the district. The application had been recommended by the Taranaki Land Board. Mr W. C. Fletcher pointed out that the same man whose application for this land had been refused had in two years increased the carrying capacity of another property from 40 sheep and 10 head of cattle to 250 sheep and 50 head of cattle. It was decided that two members should go to Wellington and place the position before the Government.
