ConyrltrM) NEW YORK, Dec. 12 President Roosevelt announces that he intends to ask Congress in January to extend the Reciprocal Trade Agreement Act, which is due to expire on June 12, says a message from Washington. At present 20 agreements are effective, three are being negotiated, namely, with Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, and two are being discussed for supplement and revision, namely, with Cuba and Belgium. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says that undoubtedly the Government is approaching one of the hardest of its battles. Growing partisan opposition is developing and will be expressed in Congress by increased Republican forces, aided by Conservative Democrats. Also, there is a probability of relentless lobbying by the strongest pressure groups in the United States. Cattlemen and woolgrowers have already passed a resolution to oppose the extension of the Act. and many manufacturers are expected to oppose it in its present form.
