RATIONING SUPPLIES

CONSUMPTION OF BUTTER FARMERS’ UNION SUGGESTION (Special to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Tuesday With a view to enabling New Zealand to export another 8000 to 10,000 tons of butter a year, a suggestion that New Zealanders should limit their consumption of butter to half-a-pound a week was made by Mr A. Topham at the December meeting of the Morrinsville branch of the Farmers’ Union. Mr Topham moved:—“That, owing to the Minister of Marketing being unable to pay a price sufficient to cover costs of dairy production, this branch of the Farmers’ Union suggests that the only way to increase our export of butter is to ration the consumption within New Zealand to half a pound a week.” It was agreed by other speakers that there was no prospect of any marked increase in the production of dairy produce this season. Under present conditions farmers were not in a position to increase their production. The motion was carried and will be forwarded to the Auckland executive of the Farmers’ Union.
