USEFULNESS PAST

BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY VICE-PRESIDENT’S OPINION REMARKS AT ROSE SHOW In his opinion the Hamilton Beautifying Society had almost outlived a useful existence, said Dr. H. Douglas, patron of the Hamilton Horticultural Society, and a vicepresident of the Beautifying Society, at the opening of the Hamilton Horticultural Society’s rose show yesterday. Dr. Douglas stated that the society found it almost impossible to carry on its work on its present income, and efforts in various directions had had to be curtailed. Much had been done to improve the town, but there was still a great deal that could be done, but not the means to do it. He thought the civic authorities realised the position, and hoped that greater efforts would be made to provide the town with even more beautiful parks and gardens. Criticism, he added, had been levelled at both the Hamilton Beautifying Society and the Hamilton Domain Board, but he believed that the mass of public opinion was behind these bodies in the work they had done. First For Many Years In opening the show Dr. Douglas referred to the fact that it was the first of its kind that had been held for many years. He paid a tribute to Mr H. H. Bennett, of Te Kowhai, who had sponsored the idea of a show almost exclusively for roses. Dr. Douglas mentioned the work of the president of the society, Mr A. W. Ward, those who had helped in the staging, and the judges who had carried out a difficult task so satisfactorily. Mr Ward, in introducing Dr. Douglas, thanked the exhibitors for their fine support and commented on the initiative displayed by Mr Bennett. Referring to future shows to be held by the society, he said the New Zealand Daffodil Association had decided on Hamilton as the venue for its show next September.
