HELP FOR FARMERS
ORGANISING WOMEN EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS FORMATION OF RURAL SCHOOL The question of providing helpers for farmers, to enable them to maintain production in the case of a national emergency, was discussed at a recent meeting of the accommodation and evacuation committee of the Hamilton Emergency Precautions Committee, when Mr W. H. Paul reported that various steps had already been taken. Mr Paul, who is chairman of the accommodation committee, said that as a result of the discussion he interviewed Mr C. J. Parlane, general manager of the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company, and it was decided to arrange a conference with the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, and Mr T. E. Rodda, manager of the Ruakura Farm. As a result of the conference it was arranged that Mr Rodda should communicate with his department with a view to establishing a State Rural School at the farm for women and girls anxious to enrol. It was also reported by Mr Paul that the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin had decided to hold a conference of women’s organisations to discuss the question. From inquiries made in Hamilton it was learned that there were 66 pupils at the Hamilton Technical High School, and 33 at the Hamilton High School, who were milking at present, and 131 at the Technical School and 125 at the High School who knew how to milk.
