ROSE SHOW
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY VERY BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY The venture of the Hamilton Horticultural Society to introduce a Rose Show into its schedule, met with unqualified success yesterday, when the Winter Show Hall presented a picture which will live long in the memory of those privileged to view the marvellous display. Although the heat in the hall was a little overpowering, this had the result of drawing the fullest perfume from the roses and was soon forgotten by the patrons in their admiration of the blooms. In introducing Dr. Hugh Douglas, the patron, who opened the show, Mr A. W. Ward, president, thanked the exhibitors for their fine response and mentioned the exhibits of Mrs Douglas, the Memorial Park and the magnificent display by Mr H. H. Bennett, of six hundred perfect specimens of roses, which was perhaps one of the finest exhibitions of roses yet seen in the Dominion. Dr Douglas spoke with pleasure of the large number attending and outlined the reasons for the introduction of the rose show. In concluding he expressed the opinion that there would be less heard of women’s nerves if they would spend more time in their gardens. Mrs Bradley, of Te Aroha, was then presented with the Douglas Cup. She was also the winner of the champion bloom. The judges were Mrs M. Dawson and Messrs E. Hosking and E. J. Hollinger. Afternoon tea was served in the adjoining hall, which had been charmingly arranged with roses and palms. The Committee Women committee members are as follows:—Mesdames C. W. Armstrong, T. A.
