STRUCK WITH POKER

ASSAULT ON GIRL OF 13 (Special to Times.) WHANGAREI, Thursday An elderly farmer, Charles Cross, of Paihia, pleaded guilty in the Kawakawa Police Court to a charge of having assaulted his niece, aged 13, by striking her across the shoulders, head and arms with an iron poker. Accused was fined £1 10s by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M. Evidence was given by the police that Cross was the guardian and uncle of the girl. On September 6 she had broken two windows in the home and as a result she had been struck by Cross. Questioned by the Bench. Cross said that the girl was very difficult to handle and that he had not intended to hurt her, but only to frighten her. The police evidence showed that the girl had not been badly hurt. “Even if you have experienced difficulty with the girl, that is no reason why you should strike her with a poker,” the magistrate said.
