GOLF TITLES

DOMINION TOURNEY THREE CONTESTS BEGUN SHOWERY WEATHER (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Showery weather marred the opening of the New Zealand golf championships at Miramar this morning, when play commenced in the first round of the open championship. Thirty-two competitors will qualify for the amateur title and 16 for the professional. The absence of R. A. Locke, the open title holder, and other wellknown professionals from overseas has robbed the tournament of some of its interest. However the entries, numbering 160, include all the leading New Zealand amateurs and professionals, and brilliant play may be expected during the next week. The course is in perfect order, reflecting credit on the Miramar professional, R. C. Butters, the staff and club officials. Bogey is 74 for the 6237 yards course. The greens were holding this morning, and a strong wind tested the skill of the players. The low handicap players were the last away this morning, and their scores will not be available until late this afternoon. It was after 1 p.m. before R. H. Glading, B. M. Silk, P. G. F. Smith, J. P. Hornabrook and I. A. Ewan, who are among the leading amateurs, and Alex. Murray, A. Shaw, C. C. Clements, N. H. Fuller, A. E. Guy, the best of the professionals, started on their rounds.

The wind had increased by 1 p.m. and the bleak rainy conditions made accurate driving extremely difficult. Progress results are as follows:
