FAST SIX FURLONGS

WILDORE BEATS ORWERE GALLOPS AT TE RAPA PREPARATION FOR AVONDALE (By “Martian”) The going was fast at Te Rapa this morning when the No. 1 grass was available for galloping. Several useful trials were recorded, the best of the morning being six furlongs by Wildore and Orwere, five by Wyndora and Gasacre and a half-mile by Miss Bridge and Nithmount. Conditions generally were pleasant. Respectful (Watson) and Poland (Long) were associated over six furlongs, the former doing the better of the pair in 1.17£, the last five furlongs occupying 1.35. Respectful, a member of R. Gardiner’s string, is making good progress and should be in forward condition for racing at the Waikato meeting. Poland, too, appears to be on the upgrade, and it will be interesting to see how he shapes in the Members’ Handicap at Avondale this week.

Meadow (McKenzie) was shading Surtoy (Gilmer) over the deciding stages of five furlongs which they traversed in 1.4 J. Seneta (Long) and Mio Generale (O. Mclnally) negotiated a round in 1.58£. Foxsen (Brown) dashed over three furlongs along the back, being timed to run her last two furlongs in 235. She is looking in great heart for racing ahead.

Bronze Step Hits Out Bronze Step (Gollop) impressed by the manner in which she was sticking to her work over the concluding stages of six furlongs to beat Acreman (J. Mclnally) by the best part of a length in 1.1 She appears to have taken no harm from racing at Whangarei, where she won stylishly in her first up, and should lack little on the score of condition for racing at Avondale.

An unnamed maiden by The Ace and Flashing Spear ran home from the half-mile in 50s.

The best five furlongs of the morning was that of Wyndor’a (Ensor) and Gasacre (Brown), who recorded 1.3 4-5. Both were carrying lightweights but it was, nevertheless, a commendable effort for horses of their class.

The big gelding, Herbage (AcreClover Leaf) and Kalietopea (Gollop) were associated over half-a-mile in 50s, both shaping well for novices. Miss Bridge (Taylor.) pleased by shading Nithmount (McKenzie) over tne deciding stages of half-a-mile in 49 4-ss, which was the best of the morning over the distance. Miss Bridge has shown galloping ability in the past, while Nithmount, a halfbrother to King Rey by Surveyor, resembles his relative in general conformation and has all the appearances of proving a useful proposition in due course 1 .

An Impressive Trial Orwere (McKenzie) and Wildore (Gollop), who were brought over to the track by float, provided the feature gallop of the morning. Jumping off at the six-furlong peg they ran their first quarter in 25s and clocked 1.14 for the full distance, the final half-mile requiring 50 l-ss. Wildore, who had a big pull in the weights, finished in front but the showing of Orwere was highly satisfactory in that it was his first serious gallop since the Cambridge meeting, where he was rather badly kicked on the leg. Mio Fratollo (Ensor) finished clear of Mia Regina (Hain) at the completion of seven furlongs in 1.30 2-5. The former is making steady improvement and is not without prospects in the Rangitoto Hurdles on the first day at Avondale, especially in the event of rain falling to ease the track. He is to have the services of M. Amunsden over the week-end.

Kingcraft (McKenzie) and Gay Poto (O.Mclnally) ran home from the six furlong peg in 1.18 1-5, their final half-mile being covered in 53 l-ss.

Sir Lysander (Brown), after working round to the three furlong peg at strong three-quarter pace, came home from there in 38 3-ss.

Tosh (Watson), who galloped on the plough, ran the last half-mile of his work in 525.

Additional riding engagements for Avondale include:

H. Long: Poland. N. Watson: Ureklaw. M. Amunsden: Mio Fratollo. C. L. Goulsbro: Inness Lass (second day).
