OBITUARY

MR E. F. KARL (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Monday The death occurred at the Waikato Hospital on Saturday of Mr Eric Francis Karl, a well-known farmer, of Pukeroro, aged 45 yean. The late Mr Karl was the eldeat son of the late Mr and Mrs Edward Karl and was bom at the wellknown Karl homestead at Ohaupo. At the age of seven the family moved to Pukeroro and he attended the Hautapu School and later the convent. Mr Karl farmed continuously at Pukeroro. When his father died in 1927, he and a sister carried on the property. In his younger yean he was a follower of the hunt, and was also a keen deer stalker. He is survived by two brothen. Messrs P. Karl (Pukeroro) and L. Karl (Wanganui), and three sisten, Mn F. Higgins (Cambridge), Mn J. Collet (Takanini), and Miss D. Karl (Pukeroro). MR RICHARD BURKE (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Tuesday The death has occurred at a private hospital in Auckland of Mr Richard Burke, a well-known farmer of Waitoa, aged 69 years. Bom at Panmure, Mr Burke came to Waitoa in 1893, taking up a large block of land, then in its unimproved state. Within a few years he brought the property into a high state of production, and right up to the present time he was engaged in dairying. He was looked upon as one of the best judges of stock in the district. For thirty years Mr Burke has been a 'ice-president of the Te Aroha Jockey Club, and was a past president of the Thames Valley Agricultural Pastoral and Horticulutral Association. For the past 20 years he has been a race-horse owner. He purchased the Elysian mare Elnora, and bred, among others, Gay Comet, Queen Comet, Queen Nona and Ellanui. all being winners at district fixtures, while Ellanui was successful in the winter of 1939 both at Ellerslie and Trentham. It was intended to put Into work in the near future a two-year-old by Jay from Elnora, which is highly assessed by sportsmen who have inspected him recently. The late Mr Burke was widely known and respected both as a sterling settler and sportsman. His wife died 20 years ago, and ha is survived by two sons and four daughters.
