CHURCH ANNIVERSARY
GORDONTON PRESBYTERIANS SPECIAL SERVICES HELD The 21st anniversary of the erection of the first Presbyterian Church at Gordonton was celebrated recently, special services marking the occasion. Erected in 1918, the Gordonton church was an out-station of St. Andrew’s, Hamilton, under the care of the Rev. Mackie. Owing to a change of boundaries in 1926, the charge than became an outpost of the present Knox Church, Hamilton East, under the care of the Rev. Morgan. When the church was built £550 was in hand. The remainder of the cost, £275, was lent, free of interest, by Mr J. Riddell, a foundation elder, and this debt was extinguished four years later. In 1926 a tablet was erected in the church to the memory of one of the founders, and an elder, Mr John McGregor. At one of the special anniversary services a similar tablet was unveiled to the memory of Mr and Mrs Riddell, members of the congregation for many years. The celebrations included a sacred concert, and a special children’s service.
