TE RAPA GALLOPS

FAST TIME RECORDED YOUNG PADDON IMPRESSIVE SIR LYSANDER HITS OUT (By “Martian”) The going was fast on the No. 1 grass at Te Rapa this morning when a busy programme was observed by horses claiming engagements at the approaching Avondale and Waikato fixtures. Conditions generally were pleasant and several interesting trials were recorded, the best of the morning being a fast five furlongs by Young Paddon and the maiden Maneroo and a dashing half-mile by Sir Lysander. Mayfair (Ramsay) was a neck in front of Olympus (McKenzie) over the deciding stages of five furlongs in 1.4 1-5. Both were doing their work freely throughout and should strip well when required to race, Mayfair being engaged at the Avondale fixture over the week-end. Beau Repaire worked at half-pace on the hurdle track. Classic (Thomson) was shading Respectful (Watson) over the deciding stages of half-a-mile in 495, a useful effort. Meadow (McKenzie) and Kingcraft (C. L. Goulsbro) ran home from the five-furlong peg in 1.5 and pleased by the manner in which they were revelling in their work at the end. A Smart Three Furlongs A smart three furlongs was recorded by Lady Bloater, who was doing better than Silveyor and Surtoy in 35is. Foxsen ran home from the threefurlong peg in 39 4-ss. Seneta (J. Mclnally), Trig Station (Cotter) and Poland (Telford) were associated over a round which they ran in 1.57 1-5. Tosh (Watson), who appears to be coming to hand nicely, accounted for Race Camp by several lengths at the conclusion of five furlongs traversed in 1.2}. Commemoration (Hain) and Hum-a-Song (Winder) negotiated five furlongs in 1.4, the final half-mile occupying 49is. The best sprint effort of the morning was that of Young Paddon (Watson) and Maneroo (Thomson), the former doing the better of the pair at the completion of five furlongs in 1.1 1-5. It was a smart trial on the part of both horses, who are in great fettle for pending engagements. Forest Acre (Gollop) finished in front of Wyndora (Brown) and Little Lady (Hain) over half-a-mile in 49 4-ss, the last three furlongs being run in 35 4-ss. Forest Acre is bearing a healthy appearance and appears to be coming right again. Sir LySander’s Half-mile Sir Lysander (Brown) clocked the best figures for the morning over half-a-mile, running the distance in 48is. Later he was showing signs of lameness. Little Briton (Conroy) traversed six furlongs in 1.20&, doing his work freely throughout. Susan and Mia Regina worked on the plough. The two-year-olds, Marshall Hall and Laughing Fox, ran three furlongs in 39 l-ss. Both are progressing well. Australian Star (Brown) was holding Diversity (Ensor) over the deciding stages of a round in 1.54, their final half-mile requiring 535. Australian Star executed his work well. The two-year-olds, Successful (McKenzie), Forest Bridge (Gollop), Surpai (Ensor) and Glenbevan (Curran), and the four-year-old Helga (Brown) were associated over half-a-mile, jumping away from a barrier start on the course proper. Surpai, who kept near the rails, finished in front to record 50 4-ss. Jumpers Schooled Mio Fratollo (Amunsden) and Innes Lad (C. L. Goulsbro) gave a sound exhibition of schooling over four flights of hurdles. Mio Generale (O. Mclnally), who went alone, screwed at the third fence and dislodged his rider, who, fortunately escaped with minor cuts to the face. Riding engagements for Avondale include:— H. Long.—Venture. R. E. Thomson.—Knight of Australia. N. R. McKenzie.—Meadow, Grandore. W. M. Thomson.—Palmint, Inver, Princess Val. V. Gollop.—Clipper. The apprentice W. O. Ensor met with an unusual accident while riding Surpai, one which may have been attended with more serious consequences. A stirrup iron came off during the progress of a gallop and, flying up, hit him on the back of the head, inflicting a scalp wound, which luckily was not serious.
