SCRUB FIRES
OUTBREAKS AT OHOPE FLAMES SPREAD RAPIDLY CSpeclal to Times) WHAKATANE, Tuesday A fire broke out among the brush and undergrowth at Ohope Beach on Sunday afternoon and continued throughout the night. The growth being dry the flames spread rapidly and caused considerale alarm amongst residents at the southern end of the beach, while on the land that borders the property now farmed by the native land scheme, the fire raced through teatree and bracken with great intensity. A gang of approximately 20 men attempted to control the fire, but were forced to concentrate their efforts on beating out the lower flames in order to stop it spreading toward the residences which line the flat backing on to the cliff. BLAZE AT TAUPO NEW HOUSES ESCAPE (Special to Times) TAUPO, Monday A spectacular scrub fire started in the Mere Road area of the township this afternoon and rapidly spread before a south-west wind. Several newly-erected houses narrowly escaped destruction. The fire to-night is sweeping toward Tauhara Mountain, but owing to last summer’s fires the danger to the forest plantations beyond is probably slight.
