GARDEN PARTY

Y.M.C.A.—Y.W.C.A. MOST SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION Ideal weather floured the Y.M.C.A.—Y.W.C.A. on Saturday afternoon, when a garden party was held in the delightful surroundings of Parana Park with the object oc raising funds for the association. The organisers of the function had taken full advantage of the many charms of this secluded corner, which is one of the most attractive of Hamilton's beauty spots, and exhibitions ot dancing on the lawns, fishing for “big game” in the pond, and Ihe serving of tea under the trees were only a few of the amusements offered for the entertainment of the many guests present. In a short speech Mr E. Trevena, chairman of the board, introduced His Worship the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, who opened the function, in the absence of the Mayoress, through illness. Mr Caro spoke of the excellent work being done by the associations in Hamilton and, in declaring the garden party open, wished them every success. With the assistance of the Physical Welfare and Recreation branch, Hamilton, the Y.M.C.A.—Y.W.C.A. gave two displays—one of Czechoslovakian folk dancing by the secondary school girls’ class. These dances were performed in colourful native dress and were most attractive. The other was a series of rhythmic exercises and falls designed for flexibility and general bodily control. Opportunity was taken later in the afternoon by the Y.W.C.A. and members to farewell Miss Margaret Mawson, secretary to the Y.W.C.A., who leaves shortly for England where she is to be married. Mrs H. H. Toombs, president, in presenting Miss Mawson with a handbag containing a cheque, spoke of her great popularity, the untiring and unselfish work she had rendered to the association and of the regret felt by all at her departure. Her remarks were heartily endorsed by Mr Trevena and Mr F. Findlay, deputy-mayor, and by Mr Ledgerwood, on behalf of the staff. Those in charge of the various stalls were:— Produce, Business and Professional Women’s Club, Miss F. Young, Miss C. Mitchell, Miss D. Shepherd, Miss V. Fulston, Miss R. Hewison and Miss I. Scobie. Sweets, Girl Citizens, Miss A. Taylor, Miss P. Chestnut, Miss L. Kirk and Miss P. Hebditch. Cakes, Junior Women’s Club, Mrs G. W. Hope-Johnstone, Mrs A. S. Green, Mrs C. J. Hope-Johnstone, Mrs D. H. Ballantyne, Mrs A. R. Norris. Novelties, Women’s Social Club, Mrs L. Cubis, Mrs J. Nicolas, Mrs H. McCoskrie, Mrs Morrow and Miss E. M. Bennett. Lucky dip, Miss Joan Redmond. Afternoon tea, Mrs J. R. Fow, Mrs H. Luxford, Mrs B. Woodhams, Mrs S. L. Gilbert, Mrs W. Earl, Mrs H. E. Jacka, Mrs L. Pike, Mrs M. A. Gall, Mrs A. H. Malcolm, Mrs F. Herbert, Miss M. Bell. Mrs Toombs was wearing a woven suit of spring green and a toning hat, and Miss Mawson was in an embroidered linen jacket worn with a navy skirt and a white straw hat.
