WORK IN BOROUGH
STATE HOUSING PROGRESS I SCHEME AT HAYES PADDOCK FURTHER BUILDING SECTIONS While the arrangements to begin s taking the remainder of the Garden E Place hill away are being completed, b the major works in progress in the 0 Hamilton borough consist of activi- e ties at the two State housing areas E of Hayes Paddock and Richmond g Estate, the levelling and preparing g of gullies to receive the spoil, and the s reticulation of the borough watet f supply of Melville and Maeroa. The Hayes Paddock area, on which e the State Housing Department is ( building a model garden suburb, is g now completely formed and drainage has been completed. The ground has been levelled and made ready for ( building, while all streets in the area t have been formed. i The bulldozer, which completed r this vast work in less than two j months, is now on the sections in j Palmerston Street preparing them ( i for building sites. It is possible to . ! drive over all the streets in the Hayes , | Paddock area, and one can now gain j a definite impression of how the completed scheme will look when it is j finished. i Roads In Hayes Paddock J One entrance is from McFarlane 1 Street. This street has been widened, | levelled and graded, so that no difficulty will be experienced in carting materials to the scheme. The entrance to Hayes Paddock from McFarlane Street is along Bledisloe Terrace. This sweeps down in a semi-circle, crossing Plunket Drive, which is the main road in the centre of the area, and then runs into Jellicoe Drive, which skirts the Waikato River. Galway and Onslow Streets run from Jellicoe Drive through Plunket Drive, and have an access to lower Wellington Street. The long, winding, narrow road that was the access to Hayes Paddock front this end has completely disappeared, as also has the plantation of bluegums. The access is now up to the standard required. Many of the houses in the Richmond Estate areas are nearing completion and several are already occupied. The strip of land between the roadway and Graham Park, which runs right down to the river, will be sown in grass and used as an open space. Comprehensive plans will be suggested by the borough engineed, Mr R. Worley, to turn the park into a useful asset. Scheme For Graham Park At the present time Graham Park a wilderness of deep gullies, but ,th the potentialities of the modern rt shifting machinery and the ianged outlook that is now possible ith such areas, the engineer expects . formulate a scheme that will turn le park into a useful asset, enhancg the beauty of the Richmond state area. However, he indicates iat it will be an expensive proposion, and it will probably be some oars before a start can be made ith any scheme. The piping of the gully between almerston Street and Clarence .treet has been completed and the jntire gully will be filled with spoil from the Garden Place Hill. To save spoil, owing to the increased demand for it, a bulldozer is engaged in flattening out the gully to a great extent. This will save about 9000 cubic yards and facilitate the dumping o£ the spoil. About 10 building sites will be provided. The gully in Palmerston Street will be filled in to a depth of about 120 feet. The work of reticulation of the borough water supply to Melville and Maeroa is being undertaken by the borough on behalf of the Waipa County.
