COAL GAS FOR MOTORS
TESTS BY GOVERNMENT (By Telegraph.— Press Association) GREYMOUTH, Friday An assurance that the Government was investigating the possibility of the use of coal gas for motor traction purposes was given by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb. The Minister said that soon after the Government came into office one or two machines powered by coal gas had been tried by the Public Works Department, and he believed that they were still doing good work. However, because of the price of petrol, they were not considered economic at the time. Since then the Department of Industries and Commerce had ordered for testing purposes two types of such machines from England and France. “We are seeking the very best information and have on order the very best type of machine,” the Minister said. Referring to the search for oil in the Dominion, Mr Webb said he had a very strong hope, more than a wish, that oil w'ould be found not far from Greymouth in the not uistant future. “1 would sooner have a few bob on that,” Mr Webb said, ‘ than on the races next week.”
