PREFERENCE SOUGHT
RETURNED SOLDIERS' REQUEST RETRENCHMENT OF STAFFS (By Telegraph.—Preaa Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday The New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association is asking employers who may be compelled to retrench because of the war to give preference to returned soldiers, so that they may retain their employment. The following extracts from a letter to the Associated Chambers of Commerce from the Returned Soldiers’ Association were placed before a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce:— “At a meeting of the special subcommittee of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association it was reported that certain employers are compelled to retrench owing to circumstances arising out of the war, and that in some cases returned soldiers have lost their employment. It was resolved that employers be requested in all cases w'here it is necessary to retrench that preference be given to former soldiers to retain their employment”
