MINE DISASTER
ROYAL COMMISSION DATE FIXED FOR SITTING INQUIRY INTO TRAGEDY The Royal Commission appointed by Cabinet to inquire into the Glen Afton mine disaster which occurred on September 24 and took toll of 11 lives, will commence its investigation on November 27. The sitting will be held in either Hamilton or Huntly and the proceedings will be open to the public. The members of the commisson are Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., of Hamilton, who will be chairman, Mr J. C. Brown (Westport), Mr J. Dongray (Granity), Mr T. O. Bishop (Wellington) and Mr A. McLaglan (Greymouth). The original intention was for the commission to report not later than December 8, but some difficulty may be experienced in completing the inquiry by that time and an extension may be applied for. A considerable number of witnesses will be called, the majority of whom will be from the mine field district. For that reason it is considered by the commission that Huntly would be a suitable venue, but difficulty may be experienced in securing adequate accommodation there for the proceedings. The seat of the inquiry will probably be fixed definitely this week.
