LENGTHY RECORD

KEREPEEHI OFFENDER SENTENCE OF 18 MONTHS’ GAOL (Special to Time*.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday A sentence of 18 months' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr Justice Fair in the Supreme Court today on Charles Richard George Ross, aged 39 (Mr Noble), who had been found guilty of receiving and uttering a cheque stolen from the Kerepeehi Post Office. Counsel said that Ross had several previous convictions, but he seemed to be a very good worker under supervision. Unfortunately he seemed to get into bad company. His Honour said that Ross had a very bad record, and he had been convicted of no fewer than 72 offences. “I must warn the prisoner,” His Honour continued, "that I have seriously considered whether he should be declared an habitual criminal, and if he comes before the Court again charged with serious crime of this nature he will almost certainly be so declared.” SENTENCE FOR THEFT MAORI WOMAN SENT TO GAOL (Special to Times) AUCKLAND. Tuesday A Maori woman, Materia Brown, aged 45, who had been found guilty of the theft of £137 10s in notes from a Chinese, Lee Jung, was sentenced to 12 months’ reformative detention by Mr Justice Fair in the Supreme Court today. His Honour said that the accused had a formidable list extending over the past 15 years, and comprising some 19 convictions. She had been treated leniently in the past, but it did not seem to have been of great use.
