DOMESTIC TROUBLES
NEW ACT IN FORCE FIRST HAMILTON CASE Aimed at exhausting all possible avenues to effect a settlement of domestic difficulties between man and wife before separation proceedings are taken, the Domestic Proceedings Act came into operation to-day. Its first application was in a case in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, this morning. The Act, which is in amendment of the Destitute Persons Act, sets out that when a complaint is taken out, attempts shall be made at conciliation before a summons in connection with separation proceedings is issued. It is only when attempts by a conciliator fail that the matter comet up for adjudication by the Court. The Act makes the disclosure of any information gained by the conciliator an dffenee. Mr Mac Cormack, maintenance officer, was appointed conciliator in the case which came before the Court to-day. A similar procedure to that now in force in New Zealand was adopted in England some time ago, and is said to nave proved valuable.
