COMMANDER’S STORY
SINKING OF COURAGEOUS SUBMARINE NOT DAMAGED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 28 In a broadcast account of the sinking of H.M.S. Courageous, the submarine commander said:— “We were south-west of Ireland looking for a Sunday joint when we saw a British ship at 4 p.m. We submerged and waited for Tt to come nearer. Then suddenly we saw the Courageous with an escort of two aeroplanes and other vessels. “We waited 90 minutes until the Courageous was athwart our bows. By the periscope we saw two destroyers coming toward us. Therefore, we fired our torpedoes. “We heard several detonations and then the thrash of the destroyers’ propellers overhead. The depth charges shook the cups from the table and the electric lights from their sockets. We dived deep and were not damaged. We stayed under for several hours.”
