Production and Hours The Whakatane County Council at its last meeting considered a resolution asking the Government to extend working hours, members pointing out that with a labour shortage and short hours it was impossible to increase production. One speaker said that the hands on a local station were dissatisfied. Shepherds were working from 4 a.m. till 7 or 8 p.m. for 14s 6d, while men employed in the land development scheme were receiving 17s 6d for eight hours. Charges of Theft Appearing before Mr G. K. L. Laurenson, in Wellington yesterday. “A number of cases has been reported to me of motorists losing their coupons,” said Mr Laurenson. “In every case the owner of the coupons was carrying around with him a whole 12 months’ supply, although he might well have kept the coupons for the next 11 months in a place of safety. In no case did the coupons carry any marks of ownership that would facilitate their return by the finder.” Motor Trade Bright Confirmation of a report that the effect of war measures on the motor trade had been comparatively small was given at an official meeting of the car importers and distributors’ committee of the Allied Motor Traders’ Association in Auckland yesterday. The report stated that at present, contrary to general belief, trade was said to be good and the general outlook cheerful. The committee expressed the opinion that a very definite shortage of all cars could be anticipated. It was felt that the importation' of any cars throughout the duration of the war was highly_improbable.
