MINE APPOINTMENTS

GLEN AFTON COLLIERIES REPLACEMENT OF KEY MEN (Special to Times) GLEN AFTON, Saturday Temporary appointments to enable the resumption of work at the Glen Afton collieries, which have been idle since the disaster which caused the deaths of 11 key men last week-end, were announced by the superintendent, Mr P. Hunter, last night. The repairs at the Glen Afton mine had been completed, said Mr Hunter, and Mr G. Duggan, Chief Inspector of Mines, would make a final inspection to-day. If his report were satisfactory work would be resumed at the Glen Afton and MacDonald mines on Monday. Mr Hunter said that Mr Andrew Burt, formerly manager of the Pukemiro colliery, had been appointed manager of the Glen Afton mine and Mr W. Wood, formerly manager of the Extended colliery had been appointed manager of the MacDonald mine. Mr T. Thompson had been transferred from the MacDonald mine to take up a responsible post in the Glen Afton mine, and Mr T. Cowan had been appointed to take Mr Thompson’s place. All the men named were fully qualified, said Mr Hunter.
