NELSON EDDY

SONGS IN “BALALAIKA” SUNG IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES Nelson Eddy is to sing the “Volga Boatsong” in Russian, “Silent Night” in German and another song in French, in “Balalaika.” This is said to be the first time Mr Eddy will have sung in a foreign language on the screen and is regarded to be very daring. Judging by the average English (or American) translations of serious song lyrics for the screen, says a writer in a film magazine, I should call it quite a good idea. I only hope no misguided attempt will be made to offer literal English translations in sub-titles. The word-for-word captions to Grace Moore’s arias in “Louise”— “Ever since the day unto thee I gave me” is a fair sample—supplied some of the most grotesque unintentional hilarity in my experience.
