GROW MORE VEGETABLES

ADVICE TO HAMILTONIANS “SPARE SPOTS IN THE GARDEN” Endorsing the advice of New Zealand politicians, which has been expressed frequently during the last few weeks, the Hamilton Beautifying Society issued a recommendation last night to all people in Hamilton to grow vegetables where it is found possible to do so. Mr H. M. Hammond said it was desirable that people cultivated every spare spot in the garden for vegetables. If private people grew vegetables for their own use a surplus would be created among commercial growers and that would be available for export to England, where it seemed likely that the supply would be needed during the war. In that way the fact that private •people grew vegetables was not likely to adversely affect the businesses of commercial growers. Surprise was expressed at the meeting that many farmers did not set aside even the smallest patch of ground for vegetables, but preferred to purchase them in the town. The chairman of the society, Mr W. H. Paul, said the Hamilton Domain Board was working upon a scheme for community vegetable growing in the town. School children in Otorohanga have established over 200 vegetable plots since the outbreak of the war.
