TOURIST DOMAIN SCHEMES PROVISION FOR REST ROOM (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Thursday. The Mayor, Mr R. Coulter, presided on Wednesday night at the monthly meeting of the Te Aroha Borough Council, Messrs G. Hedge, V. G. Hamilton, \V. E. Smith, W. T. Dale, W. C. Kennedy, F. T. Halligan, W. A. Clark, J. L. Otter, the town clerk, Mr F. W. Wild, and the borough electrician, Mr C. Dalton, also being present. Permission was granted the Te Aroha Women’s Division to hold a street stall in October. The Chamber of Commerce wrote protesting against the Mayor’s reference to the chamber having been antagonistic to the council, especially in respect or the proposed public swimming bath in the Tourist Domain, and stating it was ever the aim of the chamber to give its help in all matters likely to assist in the progress of Te Aroha.. Messrs Clark, Otter and Kennedy, who are also members or the chamber, Mr Hedge and the Mayor spoke briefly on the subject on the same lines as previously. The letter was received. A letter was received from Mr J. Thorn, M. stating that the sum of £SOO appeared In the Supplementary Estimates for the erection of a rest-room in the Tourist Domain. Satisfaction was expressed in regard to the proposed addition to the Domain buildings. Hospital Board Levy The Waikato Hospital Board wrote stating that owing to an alteration in the capital value figures or the Matamata County, the levy on the Te Aroha Borough Council Tor the year 1939-40 would be £1026 Ss 2d. The Minister in Charge or the Tourist and Publicity Department, the Hon. F. Langstone, advised that Dr. Duncan had reported against rurther boring for water in the Domain. The cost or other schemes propounded was prohibitive. He had advised the Mayor last January that the annual expenditure on the Domain was £4735 and the revenue £1 275, leaving a debit balance of £3460. The cheapest of alternate schemes would be a fresh-watei tepid bath, entailing an annual charge of £1406, and he could not recommend this expenditure at the present time. The Ministry or Housing wrote intimating that it was now the desire or the Department to vest the new street in the Government housing block In the council, and asked Tor a certificate to the effect that the street and footpaths were In order and the dedication would be accepted by the council. It was decided to accept the dedication of this extension of 'Rata Street, In which 2 0 dwellings have been completed while twelve more are in course of erection. Emergency Precautions The 'Minister or Internal Affairs forwarded a copy or the Emergency Precautions, providing for local body control of essential services. The manager of the municipal abattoir reported that in the month or August 82 cattle, 235 sheep and 5 3 pigs were slaughtered, the fees amounting to £95 18s 3d. It was decided to appoint Mr N. Rigden slaughterman, vice Mr A. Vincent, who had enlisted, the position to he kept open for the latter. On the recommendation of the works committee it was decided to reduce expenditure by not carrying out the work or bitumenising the side streets It was decided to take steps in regard to “permanent tenants” using the borough camping ground ln_ future. OTOROHANGA NEWS TOWN BOARD AFFAIRB TENNIS CLUBS MEET (Special to Times) OTOROHANGA, Thursday. At the recent meeting of the Otorohanga Town Board the application of the management of the Regent Theatre to screen pictures on Christmas Day was refused. The local branch of the Red Cross Society asked for the free use or the Town Hall annexe every Wednesday afternoon Tor the duration of the war Tor use as a sewing room. On the motion of Messrs A. C. Wilshier and R. Bell the request was granted. It was decided to call tenders for the rubbish collection contract, as the present contractor, Mr Sower by, was discontinuing his contract. The board decided to supply water to the public pound at an annual fee of £3 instead or the usual £5 LAWN TENNIS The Northern King Country Sub-asso-ciation held Its annual meeting or club delegates at Otorohanga, when the following were in attendance:—-Messrs E. Taylor and A. Prescott (Otorohanga), R. Waretini (Te Kuiti), R. Armstrong (Te Awamutu), A. C. Thompson, president (Otorohanga), and F. Miller, secretary. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr G. W. Fulton (Te Awamutu) ; president, Mr A. C. Thompson (Otorohanga); vice-presidents, Messrs A. C. Wilshier, E. Pqrter and P. H. Jones; secretary, Mr F. J. Miller; selector, Mr R. Waretini; executive committee, Messrs V. Purcell, E. Taylor, R. Armstrong, R. Waretini and B. K. White. The balance-sheet showed the association to be financially sound. Inter-club contests will commence about the end or October, and the season will open earlier in that month. Maihiihi Tennis Club A new tennis club lias been formed at •Maihiihi and the following officers have been elected:— Patron, Mr H. E. Walters; president, Mr G. J. Disher; vice-presidents, Messrs A. L. Mexted, E. H. Young, and J. C. Petersen; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr S. G l . Still; management committee, Mrs S. G. Still, Miss K. Young and Messrs F. Pinfold, S. Stock and J. C. Petersen, jun. Subscriptions have been fixed at 5s a member, and the office or captain will be decided when play commences. TABLE TENNIS Table tennis is proving a popular game at Otorobanga, where there is a strong club. An Auckland team recently visited the town consisting of the four leading players, E. Cheal (captain), R. Thomas, L. Hitchens and 11. Hartnoll. The visit was sponsored by the New Zealand Table Tennis Association, and the matches and various exhibitions were played m the Otorobanga Town Hall annexe. In conjunction with matches played by the visitors, a local singles tournament was played, and also a doubles event in which the visitors paired with local club members HOCKEY TROPHIES Tbe trophies presented at the Otorohanga Hockey Club’s dance on Tuesday night were won as follows: Isaac Cup t Tor match with Walroa: Otorohanga team. Cup for most improved player: L. Fraer; medal for runner-up. B. Cochrane. Haddad Cup, match with Ohaupo: Otorohanga Colts. Finch Cup, King Country competition: Otorohanga team (third successive win). Isaac Challenge Shield, Auckland province: Otorohanga Club. DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB The Otorohanga DeTence Rifle Club's double range shouting tournament drew a large number or rillemen and spectators to the range. The following were the best scores: L. Palmer, 48, 44 (92); F. E. Hyde, 45, 43 (88); F. Thomas, 43, 42 (85;; J. Somerville, 40, 39 (79;; C. Hoare, 36, 4 1 (77); H. Murphy, 34, 40 (74); Jack Klein, 35, 39 (74); E. Southall, 37, 37 (74); S. Shooting conditions, owing to drizzlingrain and changing light, were poor. FISHING SEASON With the new fishing spason opening on Sunday, considerable interest is already manifest.
