GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS
The final gallops for the Ohinemuri meeting took place on the various tracks this morning. L. J. Ellis L. J. Ellis was among the spectators at Geraldine. If all goes well he hopes to be back in the saddle at the Dunedin spring meeting. Silver River Silver River, who is due to make his debut as a hurdler at Otaki on Saturday, has been in work for nearly three months and he has already given promise in his schooling. Master Brierly Master Brierly has been bowling along in free style on the tracks at Te Rapa and with the firming of the tracks he may soon be seen to better advantage. On Saturday he is entered for the Poland Cup and it is quite on the cards that if a surprise is recorded it may come from this direction. Beau Vite’s Rider M. McCarten, who is to steer Beau Vite in the A.J.C. Derby, is 36 years of age, and has been riding since he was 14. In an interview not long ago he described Ajax as the fastest horse, Ballymena as the best stayer, and Limerick as the greatest horse he has ever ridden. The Cardinal The Cardinal was not produced on the second day at Avondale, and his only other race in the spring prior to the New Zealand Cup may be in the Mitchelson Cup next month. Plans For Peerless Peerless arrived back in the Dominion from Sydney this week. She lost a bit of condition, but looked better than expected. It is probable that she will resume racing at Trentham next month. Young Paddon Young Paddon was among those to impress in the semi-final trials at Te Rapa the other morning and it is apparent that the course of schooling given him recently is having beneficial effect. He is among the acceptors for the open sprint on the first day at Paeroa and it will be interesting to note how he shapes. A Likely Improver Grey Night’s favouritism for the open sprint at Geraldine last Saturday suggested that he might not be long in adding to his score this season. He is still well within the hack margin. Recovered
The Ellerslie jockey L. Dulieu has made a good recovery from his recent operation, and will resume riding at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s meeting, when his mounts will include Llangollen, Kenneth Robert and Charcot.
Jewish Lad Jewish Lad, who was allowed to pay nearly a score in the hurdle race at Orari the other day, showed great promise in the spring, but appeared to rick his back in a race at Riccarton and then lost form. He was then trained by D. Cotton, but recently was transferred to J. McLean’s stable.
Royal Bachelor Royal Bachelor is to contest the open sprint at Paeroa on Saturday and as he has been working in attractive style this week he will not lack support in engagements at the meeting. It is in favour of Julian's representative that he possesses that early brilliance so essential on a turning course such as Paeroa. Being Persevered With It was only a few weeks ago that an announcement was made in the south that Lady Leigh had been retired to the stud, but she was back under colours at Geraldine last week and was winner of the open sprint on Saturday. She pulled up lame, but is to be persevered with as a racing proposition for at least another season. Offers For Gold Salute Sydney reports state that good offers have already been made for the Lord Warden three-year-old colt Gold Salute, but so far no business has resulted. The price put on him before he left New Zealand was a thousand guineas. A Likely Novice Among the likely novices entered for the Maiden Handicap at the Ohinemuri meeting is Gas Acre, who in the semi-final gallops at Te Rapa on Tuesday drew attention to his immediate prospects by an attractive trial over five furlongs, the figures for the distance, 1.8 1-5, being equal to the best of the morning. He carried a lightweight, but the impressive feature of the effort was the manner in whichh e was finishing on over the deciding stages.
Poland Cup Candidate Valmint is to fulfil his engagement in the Poland Cup at Paeroa on Saturday and will be ridden by his usual pilot, H. Wiggins. In the past Valmint has invariably been beaten in his races away from Ellerslie, but his latest trials indicate that it will take a good horse to lower his colours next week-end.
A View Confirmed The further success of Beau Vite in Sydney on Saturday confirms the view of his connections expressed a fortnight ago that he would take all sorts of beating in the A.J.C. Derby next Saturday. His most serious rival may now be another New Zealander, Gold Salute, who has won two races within a week in Sydney, beating big fields each time.
Royal Chief It was obvious that Royal Chief would be top-weight for the New Zealand Cup, and with 9.6 he appears to be relatively better off on a 7.0 minimum than in the A.J.C. Metropolitan with 9.9 and the minimum at 6.7. It is worth noting, too, that if he should win at Randwick he cannot be penalised for the New Zealand Cup, as the conditions of the Riccarton race provide that no horse may be rehandicapped to carry more than weight-for-age.
Race Improved Him The racing that Beverley had at Avondale did him good and he is now infusing more dash into his work. Last‘Saturday morning this hack was responsible for an excellent trial over six furlongs and was running on in great style at the finish. Beverley has always been staying on at the end of his races and it would not surprise to see him on the winning list before the season is much further advanced. A Solid Colt Although Taitama did not win by any big margin in the Juvenile Handicap at Marton on Saturday it was the style in which he scored that impressed. He stood up the leaders at least half a dozen lengths early, and quickly got into a position from which he finished on resolutely when called upon. Taitama is a strong, solid-looking colt, and is bred to be good, being by Ringmaster from Lady Bentinck, a sister to Lady Cavendish, and half-sister to Reremoana.
From a Staying Family Sleeveless, who is making her name as a smart three-year-old, is the last foal of her dam, Chivalry, who is by Gay Lad from Lady Talbot, by Pilgrim’s Progress—Lady Lilian, by Phaeton—Lady Zetland. Lady Lilian produced Lady Victoria, dam of the New Zealand Cup winner, Royal Star, and Lady Minerva, dam of the Auckland Cup winner, Minerval. It is, therefore, not surprising that Sleeveless, in addition to possessing pace, can also run on well. FIRST PAYMENT CHIEF HASTINGS EVENT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) HASTINGS, Wednesday After the declaration of first forfeit, the following remain in the Hastings Stakes, of £250, two-year-olds, four furlongs, which will be run on the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting, to be held on October 5 and 7: Versatile, Bombay, El Minola, Myriad, Kindergarten, Isis, bay colt by Hunting Song—Real Lace, Barbara Millar, Smoke Trail, Indore.
