AT WAITERIMU-MATAHURU
There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Waite-rimu-Matahura Women’s Institute, when Mrs C. Storey presided. Members promised to give any aid required durmg the present international crisis. The roll call, “Something I treasure,” brought some interesting replies. The competition results were as follows: Best bloom, Mrs McGovern 1, Mrs J. Grundy 2; knitted article, Mrs Irving 1, Mrs Newton 2; hostesses’ competition, Mrs J. Storey. The raffle for the community quilt was won by Mrs J. Grundy. Birthday greetings were extended to Mrs Brash and she was presented with a posy of flowers. Hostesses for the day were Mrs W. Storey and Miss Taylor. AT TE UKU The September meeting of the Te Uku Women’s Institute took place in the Memorial Hall, Mrs G. Dent presiding over a good attendance of members and friends. The first business of the day was to elect a new secretary in the place of Miss Coralie Gibbison, who has
resigned from her duties and is leaving the district to enter the nursing profession. As the result of the election, Mrs K. Gifford is now secretary, Mrs F. Peart, vice-presi-dent and Miss Mary Featherstonhaugh, treasurer. Members were asked to bring their gifts for the patients on Makogai Island to the next month’s meeting. Mrs Silcock was elected delegate to the Waikato Federation conference to discuss the new constitution. In view of the national crisis, the following committee has been formed to deal with any emergency that might arise:—Convener, Mrs Featherstonhaugh; committee, Mesdames Chaytor, O. Wallis, G. Dent, W. Moore, A. Moon and G. Lusty. The sales table, presided over by Mrs R. Johnstone, did excellent business, the proceeds of which were handed over to Institute funds. Mrs F. Peart gave an instructive demonstation on wreath-making. The roll of honour results were as follows:—Bowl of freesias, Miss McDonald 1, Mrs R. Johnstone 2; jar of apricot jam, Mrs De’Ath 1, Mrs Featherstonhaugh 2; best bloom, Miss Mead 1, Miss McDonald 2. Hostesses were Mesdames Wallis, Ormiston, Checkley and Misses Ormiston, Checkley, J. and O. Dyke. AT TE PAHU The September meeting of the Te Pahu Women’s Institute was held in the Te Pahu Hall recently. Mrs Newland presided over a good attendance and welcomed as a new member Mrs L. Rowe. An account of the meeting of the group committee was given by Miss Hills, who was delegate for the Institute. Miss Hills also read an appeal for Christmas gifts for the lepers, and it was decided that instead of having an outing as is usual in October, members would meet at the hall, where a gift afternoon for the lepers would be held. A list of articles most suitable was read at the meeting. Mrs C. Harris gave a demonstration on biscuit making for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. The competition results were as follows: Best collection of spring flowers, Mrs F. Strong 1, Mrs Beet 2; best bloom, Mrs C. Follet 1, Mrs Beet 2; pikelets, Mrs Beet 1, Mrs Follett 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Hills, Miss Hills and Mrs Follett.
