AT WHATAWHATA
The September meeting of the Whatawhata Women’s Institute was held in the local hall recently. The meeting, which took the form of a
social afternoon, was very successful. Excellent business was done at the sales table. Euchre was played and non-card players were entertained with competitions. The winners were as follows: Euchre, Mrs Blackett, Mrs Bernet and Mrs Sperry. Competitions were won by Mrs R. Calder, Mrs Rowe and Miss Rothwell. The best bloom competition resulted as follows: Mrs Swanney 1, Mrs Eyre 2, Miss D. Eyre 3. Afternoon tea was served by the members. AT TE KOWHAI The September meeting of the Te Kowhai Women’s Institute, held in the hall, was presided over by Mrs Allan, when there was a very good attendance. The president welcomed visitors and Mrs J. Ward Chapman, who spoke on the work the members could do to help in these troublous times. The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. An invitation to the Whitiora birthday party was received for September 27. It was decided to send £2 to the lepers at Makogai Island. Mrs Barker was appointed delegate to attend the meeting in Hamilton to discuss the new constitution on September 26. The bienniel council meeting is to be held in Hamilton on November 7. Members are reminded of the group meeting at St. George’s Hall on October 4 at 11 a.m. Articles of knitting for the soldiers overseas are to be left at the Checker office, Hamilton, or with Mrs Chapman. Best bloom for the month competition winners were as follows: Mesdames E. Clear 1, W. Limmer 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames W. Limmer, C. Limmer, N. Nicol, Stewart, Clear, Robinson.
