INJURED BY FALLS
MAORI CHILD'S DEATH An inquest into the death of a Maori infant, Jean Mana, aged 10 months, daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Mana, Cambridge, who was admitted to the Waikato Hospital on September 22 suffering from head injuries, and died on Monday, was held before the coroner, Mr F. W. Platts, in Hamilton. yesterday. The child’s mother said her daughter had fallen out of her pram and when picked up was unconscious. Medical attention was given and the child was progressing satisfactorily until she had a second fall. She was then sent to the Waikato Hospital. Dr. John Penman said the child was admitted to the Waikato Hospital on September 22 with a bruise on the forehead. Her breathing was affected and she appeared unconscious. She later regained consciousness and appeared to be progressing, until September 25 when she again became unconscious and her breathing erratic. Death followed. In his opinion death was due to a brain injury and to pulmonary adema following that injury.
A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was returned.
