A BIG EFFORT
FINANCING THE WAR THE COUNTRY UNITED VERY SEVERE MEASURES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 25, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 24 Parliament will re-assemble on Tuesday, and on Wednesday Sir John Simon will announce his proposals for financing Britain’s gigantic war effort. It is recognised that it will be exceedingly unpleasant but it will contain no surprises, for all classes, including business circles, are prepared for the severe measures which are required, and the only concern manifest is that the methods adopted for raising the huge sums which must be raised shall be such as will cause the least dislocation of industry, since even temporary unemployment resources would be a waste which must be avoided when every ounce of the country’s strength should be available for the struggle.
LOYALTY OF ARABS
ON SIDE OF ALLIES ASSISTANCE FOR EMPIRE (Official Wireless) (Received Sept. 25, 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 24 More evidence came to-day that the Arabs in the Middle East and specially in Palestine have ranged themselves completely on the side of the British Empire in this war. The High Commissioner in Palestine reports that he has just been entertained at Beisan by the Sheikh Mohammad Zanati, who delivered an address of loyalty to the Government and to the allied cause in the present struggle. The guests, who numbered from 500 to 600, came from all tribes and villages of the Beisan sub-districts, and included members of municipal councils and other notables.
NO OPPOSITION
COMING BY-ELECTIONS CIVIC AND PARLIAMENTARY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept.. 25. 3.15 pjn.) LONDON, Sept. 24 According to the newspapers discussions have taken place in party circles which are likely to obviate any contested elections, either local or Parliamentary, for some time. The question is given actuality by the death yesterday of Mr F. C. Simpson, former Lord Mayor of Leeds and Labour member for Ashton-under-Lyne, and by the fact that the municipal elections are due on November 1.
