“ Balalaika ” as a Film The first scene of “Balalaika” has just been completed at M.G.M. studios, with Ilona Massey and Nelson Eddy in the leading roles. Popular songs and opera sequences which will be heard in the film include “The Volga Boatman,” “'Carmen,” “ Scheherazade,” “ Silent Night,” and “ Ride, Cossack, Ride.” The supporting cast includes Charlie Buggies, Joyce Compton, Lionel Atwill, Woolf King, and George Tobias. Ventriloquist’s Dummy as Detective Charlie McCarthy is following in the wake of the Sherlock Holmes revival and is turning sleuth for his next film. This will he “ Charlie McCarthy, Detective,” the second Edgar Bergen —McCarthy film. Mortimer Sncrd. another of Bergen's mannikins, also will appear in it.
