“The Outsider" - Drama and Controversy in New Film
Cinema ~. Snapshots
Ragafczy, a bonesetter whose cures have interested and antagonised the medical world, sets out to cure the crippled daughter of a Harley Street surgeon. That in itself is almost sufficient material for explosive dramatic situations. Add to that George Sanders’ portrayal of the bonesetter as a handsome, blatantly cocksure foreigner who is nearly always infuriatingly correct in his judgments and who falls in love with his patient and drama of terrific proportions should result. “The Outsider” extracts every atom of dramatic strength from this absorbing story. The climax is something to remember, it is not often that such emotional tension is reached without snapping the tread of conviction. Mary Maguire’s characterisation of the artistic girl, apparently doomed to eternal lameness, is a flawless performance. Few artistes could retain that limp in scene after scene without a hint of artificiality, but succeeds.
