COMBINED BULL FAIR
VERY CONSISTENT DEMAND BUYERS PAY TO BO GNS RECORD NUMBER PRESENT The largest pedigree cattle fixture in the Waikato, the annual bull fair of the Waikato Combined Breeders’ Association, was opened in t-he selling pavilion at the Claudelands Showgrounds yesterday, when a record bench of buyers was in attendance. Some 130 Jersey bulls were offered during the day and a feature of the market was the very consistent demand, a large proportion of the entry selling at prices above 30 gns and up to 50 gns. Bulls of any quality were in brisk request, but inferior sorts were usually dull of sale. Passings were infrequent, however, and practically all the bulls that came forward were sold under the ham-
The balance of the Jersey entries were offered at the sale today, while tomorrow Shorthorns, Friesians and Avrshires will be auctioned. Altogether over 400 entries are catalogued. The sale is being conducted by the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd., the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd.. Messrs G. W. Keen Average Values Bidding throughout the day lagged only on inferior sorts, hut the bulk of the big offering made above 20 gns, the most attractive sires making from 30 to 50 gns with other good entries changing hands from 21 to 29 gns. An indication of the consistent nature of the sale is provided by the fact that some of the best prices, including the top figure of 50 gns, were given during the concluding stages of the auction. Top price of the day, 50 gns, was given for one of the consignment from Mr G. E. Yelchich, of Waiuku. This was an outstanding yearling by Yelebit Young Prince from Parakau Gem, and was good buying at the money for Mr C. Saxon, of Kereone, Morrinsville. Another of Mr Yelchich’s consignment, Yelebit Pacific, a 2-year-old by Ku Ku True Owler and from Princess Mermaid, H.C., was knocked down to the 43-guinea bid of Mr K. W. Dalrymple, of Waharoa. The Pukeroro breeder, Mr W. S. McEwen, had a splendid two-year-old forward in Sultan’s Beau Ideal, a son of the imported bull, Surville Sultan’s Beau, and Pukepapa Princess May, H.C. The bidding on this entry stopped at 45 gns when it was sold to Mr G. Lorimer, of Te Rore. A line of five quality yo#ng sorts was sold on account of, Mr J. Colson, Colson Estate, Waihou, the five of them averaging 35 gns and selling up to 43 gns. The latter price was given by a Hawera buyer, Mr C. H. Bowman, for a yearling son of Ku Ku Glad Owl and BrookdelF Blanche in Brookdell Reliance. Mr J. J. Ryan, of Matamata, was the final bidder at 41 gns on Breffni Morning Star, a two-year-old by Alfalfa Combination and from Breffni Morning Light. The vendor was Mrs J. R. Sheehan, of Papakura. Quality bulls from Mr A. G. Melrose, of Walton, were in keen demand, one of them, Shelford Qualify, by Shelford Welcome Lord from Shelford Nymph, selling at 40* gns to Mr J. G. Mclntyre, of Te Hoe.
