CHECKING PROFITEERS DENOUNCED BY DRAPERS SETTLING PROBLEMS (United Press Assn. —Elec. TeL Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 19 Typifying the widespread effort being made in Britain to stamp out profiteering, a meeting of the Drapers’ Chamber of Trade strongly denounced profiteering and agreed that there was no justification for an increase in price* of drapery above 5 per cent. It was stated that wholesale and retail firms were exacting rises of 20 to 25 per cent. The Daily Herald says the meanest type of profiteering is occurring in connection with air raid precautions goods, including black cloth used for darkening windows. Consultations between the National Farmers’ Union and the Minister of Agriculture, Sir Reginald DormanSmith, have begun in order to ensure close co-operation in the settlement of wartime problems, including the control of sales and prices and their hearing on food production. The Minister states that action hitherto taken in order to fix food prices was provisional in order to stabilise the position pending the Food Minister's assumption of control. Future prices would depend upon factors not yet defined.

Farmers would expect reasonable returns, and would be guaranteed a market and prices for crops, and livestock would sometimes be supplemented by subsidies to be fixed as circumstances dictated.
