WANDERERS’ REWARD

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL HOWDEN CUP FINAL DECIDED VICTORY OVER CHAMPION TEAM Hamilton Wanderers’ reward for ( consistent efforts during a season in which the team was dogged by illfortune was gained a.t Seddon Park on Saturday afternoon when, in the final of the Ilowden Gup knock-out competition under the control of the South Auckland Football Association, it defeated Uotowaro, the 1939 champions and winners of the Ansell Cup, by four goals to one. The game, which was the last club fixture in the South Auckland area this year, was full of incident but was not productive of any spectacular play. The teams were : Wanderers. —Webster, Goldring, McLean, C. Crabb, IJ. Crabb, Bullock, A. Crabb, Caldwell, Stewart, lridulc, Farr. Rotowaro. Kidd, Gill, Lawson, Woodward, Robson, Barlow, Allan, R. Taylor, R. Gill, C. Stevens, Crooks. The opening of the game was undoubtedly the most sensational seen in the South Auckland area this year, for the visiting forwards took command of the play immediately and scored within 30 seconds of the opening whistle. The Rotowaro forwards went right through from the kick-off and mowed down all opposition for R. Taylor to beat Webster with a fast shot: Rotowaro 1, Wanderers 0. Although the home forwards retaliated immediately and pressed the visitors right back, their efforts were to no avail. The pressure was maintained, however, and Farr equalised matters when lie drove the ball into the net: Wanderers 1, Rotowaro 1. Fast Pace Maintained Following a period of fluctuating play, Wanderers took the advantage again and Caldwell went close with a shot at goal when Kidd was out of position. The fast pace that had characterised the opening stages was maintained throughout the first hall' and the venue change rapidly. Taking the play away in another fast attack, the Rotowaro forwards sent the ball into the net again, but were recalled for an infringement, and Wanderers took up the territorial advantage again. Rather indiscriminate kicking cost the home team .the advantage and the spell closed without addition to the scores. Early in the second spell Rotowaro took up the running again, but the advance was held up by an infringement, and, taking possession at tilie halfway line, Caldwell went away in a fine solo run to beat Kidd with a fairly easy shot: Wanderers 2, Rotowaro 1. Although the visitors retaliated strongly, they could not maintain the pressure and before long the home team was pressing hotly at Kidd’s goal. Time and again the ball was taken within striking distance, but Gill and Lawson worked well and provided a strong shield for the ’keeper. Kidd gave a good account of himself in the face of several hard shots and cleared smartly. Caldwell and Stewart sent in two hard shots which the ’keeper handled cleanly, but he was given no chance when Caldwell drove a fast shot into the net: Wanderers 3, Rotowaro 1. Rotowaro Attacks Solidly Solid efforts to reduce the deficit were employed by Rotowaro when the forwards reached Webster’s goal, and the goalkeeper was given an anxious time before the pressure was relieved. Once again the visitors took up the running from the midfield, but the venue soon swung to the other end and, taking possession in a handy position, Caldwell broke through the defence and drove the ball into the roof of the net: Wanderers 4, Rotowaro 1. Although Rotowaro attacked a few times in the closing stages, the efforts were to no avail, and Wanderers had a good share of the territorial advantage. The game closed without addition to the scores: Wanderers 4 Rotowaro l Mr A. Rogerson was the referee. At the close of the game the president of the South Auckland Football Association, Mr F. W. Mead, presented the Ilowden Championship Shield and the Ansell Cup to the Rotowaro team, and the Howden Cup to the Wanderers team.
