Copyright) (Received Sept. 18, 1 p.m.) FOREST HILLS, Sept. 17 In the semi-finals of the men’s singles at the United States national single tournament, Van Horn, a promising young player, caused a surprise by defeating J. Bromwich :Australia), 2—6, 4—6, 6—2, 6—4, B—6. R. L. Riggs (United States), who won the Wimbledon title this year, heat J. Hunt, 6—l, 6—2, 4 —6, 6—l. Riggs heat Van Horn in the final, 6—4, 6—2, 6—4. Miss A. Marble won the final of the women's singles, heating Miss H. Jacobs, 6—o, B—lo, 6—4. Playing cool and cautious tennis Riggs halted the meteoric progress of the 19-year-old Van Horn in straight sets. Tired by a gruelling five-set match on each of the two preceding days, Van Horn showed occasional flashes of the form by which he eliminated Sabin and Bromwich on successive days, but his shots were mostly wild aud ineffective. There were times when he found touch and blasted winners that left Riggs shaking his head in despair but they were all too infrequent. Van Horn’ first appearance in national singles last year saw him take a set from J. D. Budge. Today’s matches were played in a high wind.
