RACING AT AVONDALE PAYETTE SURPRISES te RAPA HORSES PERFORM WELL MIO LUME WINS HURDLES SLY FOX IN PLUMPTON (By Tel.—Special from Martian) AVONDALE, Monday The second day of the spring meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club was held in ideal weather to-day, when % there was an excellent attendance for an off day. The track was improved as a result of the fine weather over the week-end. The day’s racing opened auspiciously for Te Rapa stables, the first two races being won by Te Rapa horses, Mio Lume being successful in the hurdles and Hunto winning the Maiden Plate. Winder and came away in the straight to win In most decisive style. Blsqult who, as a result of bis success on the opening day was a Ann favourite on the win machine, made a solid showing while Adsum indicated a return to rorm. Gadger had every chance and although he was staying on solidly at the end, he was not quite equal to the placed division. King Musk led early but Blsqult soon ran to the front and passing the stands he was In charge from Adsum, Mio Lume, Kittle, Tane Mahotu, Mia Acrea, Gadger. King Musk and Roxy. Roxy lost his rider at the first Tence on the straight and along the back blsqult and Adsum were out rrom Tane Mahotu and Gadger, with Mia Acrea and Kittle handily placed and Mio Lume and King Musk following in that order. At the hair-mile Gadger went up Into third place and as they turned Tor home the order of the leaders was Blsqult, Adsum, Mio Lume, and Gadger. Coming strongly In the straight Mio Lume was In front at the last rence and won by two and a-bair lengths from Blsqult, with Adsum one and a-hair lengths away third. Gadger was right up fourth and then came Kittle, Ml* Acrea, King Musk and Lady England, Tane Mahotu having rallen at the second to last Tence. Time, 3.15. Winder, secured his second success of the day when the improving Hunto came away in the straight to win hands down from Glen Connell and The Dozer. The two latter horses also finished second and third respectively on Saturday. British Talent led early from Pern and Starbrlght, with Gay Movie, Hunto, Hunter’s Night, and The Dozer following in that order. At the hair-mile British Talent and The Dozer were In charge from Gay Movie and Starhrlght, wilh Hunto, Hunter’s Night and Pern In a handy situation. Glen Connell and The Dozer were In charge as the Held straightened up Tor home with Hunter’s Night, Gay Movie and Hunto close on their trail. Hairway down the running Hunto came through to assert himself and, hitting the front at the distance, carried on to win by hair-a-langth from Glen Connell with the Dozer a head away third. Gay Movie was Tourth and then followed Te Kawltl, Right Royal, Estro, Hunter’s Night, Starhright, Cresiman and Royal Fawkes. Time, 1.28 3-5. Kentucky, the favoarite, made a bold bid and at the distance looked to have the Issue won, while Queen City as on opening day gave a solid peiTomiance and indicated an early success among the Juvenile division. Deanna Durbin was slow to move and Payette and Kentucky jumped out and led over the ilrst lurlor.g from Desert Tide, Surpai, Happicoat aud Merrymeer. There was little alteration across the top and Payette was followed Into the straight by Kentucky, Queen City and Happicoat. Although Kentucky appeared likely inside tlie distance, Payette managed to hold on and prevail by hali-a-liead over tile favourite with Queen City only a head away third.
