GANDHIS PLEA
APPEAL TO BRITAIN FAITH IN DEMOCRACY GREAT MORAL ASSET (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 18, 11 a.m.) WARDHA, Sept. 17 Mahatma Gandhi appealed to Britain for “honest action to implement the declarations of faith in democracy made on the eve of the war.” He added: — “The recognition of India and all those under the British Crown as free and independent nations seems to me the natural corollary of the British profession of democracy. If the war means anything less than the co-operation of dependent countries it can never be honestly voluntary, unless based on non-viol-ence. “What Is required Is the mental revolution of British statesmen. Will Britain have an unwilling India dragged into the war or unwilling to ally co-operating with her in the defence of democracy? The support of Congress will mean the greatest moral asset in favour of Britain and France.”
