WOMEN’S GOLF

BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS Once again conditions were very bad last Wednesday and low scoring was an impossibility. There had been heavy rain over night and when the seniors began most of the greens were waterlogged and three putting spoilt most of the cards. The scores for the senior qualifying round for the championship were quite the worst for many years ranging from' 89 to 109. In comparison with this the scores of the juniors were very fair, ranging from 96 to 113 in the junior division and from 99 to 117 in the Gillies Vase division. The juniors certainly had the better conditions as regards weather, missing the heavy rain storm which the seniors encountered. In the seniors’ division there were three 89s carded by Mrs Seyb, Mrs McDonald and Mrs L. I. Day and on the count back the first three places were filled in the order given. Miss M. McLean secured first position among the juniors with a 96, and for the Gillies Vase players Mrs T. Simons qualified first with a 99. Mrs Bennett Reduces Handicap Mrs S. Bennett, with a score of 1 up won the eclectic bogey competition for the captain’s trophy. This is rather a poor score for an eclectic but here again the weather prevented low scoring. Mrs Bennett has now returned a second card of 85 and has reduced her handicap to 14. Mrs M. Booth had a successful day at the Walton 'Club's one-day tournament, returning the best net score over two rounds and annexing the McLean Cup. In the first round she reduced her handicap by one stroke and she has since played to this new handicap. The C grade were right on their toes last Thursday for a qualifying round for their championship. Unfortunately the weather was so boisterous that the game had to be put off, but it is hoped that it will be played next Thursday. To help those who do not find the allowance of petrol sufficient for all purposes a bus will be run to the Links at 11 a.m. next Wednesday and if sufficiently patronised will be run on all match days. The committee means to adhere to the competitions on the fixture card and the players seem keen to finish out the season as planned.
