RAPID THAW NEAR COAST (By Telegraph. itps., Association) TIMARU, Wednesday After a period of fine warm weather, South Canterbury experienced a cold snap last night and this morning. Snow is reported from several parts of the district. On the hilltops at Cave, 20 miles from Timaru, the fall was about three inches, but in Fairlie up to six inches fell. Takapo reported seven inches, while at Pukaki, which is 40 miles from Mount Cook, snow lay to a depth of nearly a foot this morning. A thaw set in later in the morning and at Fairlie and places nearer the coast the snow rapidly disappeared. ASHBURTON COUNTY (By Telegraph.— Pr«*s< Association) ASHBURTON, Wednesday The higher levels of the county experienced snow last night ranging from an inch at Mount Somers to six inches at Cleat Hills, iu Ashburton Gorge. The lower part of the county had heavy rain. Young lambs are likely to suffer.
