RIVAL CLAIMS GERMANY AND POLAND BERLIN, Sept. 13 Official: The fortified town of Modlin, in Poland, is completely surrounded by German forces. A Warsaw Polish communique claims to have routed a German division at Kutno, West of Warsaw. One thousand prisoners were taken. The radio stated that the Poles have thrown the Germans “Far back from Warsaw,” and are driving the enemy in retreat with a series of swift counter-blows west and south-west of the capital. LONDON, Sept. 13 Portugal has decided to remain neutral. FRENCH OFFENSIVE FEARED GERMANS DESTROY BRIDGE BRUSSELS, Sept. 13 Reports from Luxembourg state that the Germans have destroyed the railway bridge between Metz and Trier crossing the Moselle River. This can be attributed to German fears regarding the French offensive in this region. THE LINER BREMEN DENIAL BY ITALY LONDON, Sept. 13 The Rome correspondent of tha American Press, says it is authoritatively denied that Italy has acquired or intends to acquire the liner Bremen. FATE OF LODZ CLAIMS BY BOTH SIDES LONDON, Sept. 13 The fate of Lodz is uncertain. The Germans issue continued reports that Lodz is in their hands intact, but the Poles claim that they have recaptured it. POLISH PLANES VIOLATION OF SOVIET MOSCOW, Sept. 13 The Tass Agency charges Polish planes with frequently violating the Soviet frontier and endeavouring to penetrate far into Soviet territory. It states that Soviet airmen yesterday forced four Polish planes to land and detained fifteen members of the crews. RAIN IN POLAND ESTONIA AREA FLOODED BUCHAREST, Sept. 13 The Rumanian weather bureau states that heavy rain is falling in northern Poland. There is no rain, howevgr, in the south. It is reported from Tallinn that the entire Tarta region, in Estonia, is flooded. NATIONAL SINGLES AMERICAN TENNIS TOURNEY In the American national tennis •ingles, J. STOCK AGENT CONVICTED INTOXICATED IN CAR “Taking ail the facts into consideration there seems to be no doubt that this man was intoxicated and was not fit to drive a motor vehicle,” said Mr S. L. Paterson S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, this afternoon In convicting Neville Charles Wallace, aged 31, a stock agent, of Hamilton, for being intoxicated in charge of a car. Wallace was fined £ls, his licence to drive was cancelled for one year, and he was ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution.
